Acupuncture: General Information

An acupuncturist stimulates areas of low electrical resistance, called acupoints, in order to restore harmony and balance to the body. The insertion of hair-thin needles rarely causes discomfort. In fact, many patients fall asleep for the 15 to 60 minute treatment period while others experience deep relaxation. During treatment, the body re-aligns its distribution of bio-electric energy to achieve homeostasis- the natural drive to balance the body's temperature, fluid, and nervous system. An acupuncturist may also stimulate acupoints with heat (moxibustion, infrared), suction (cupping), pressure (acu-pressure), or a gentle electrical current (electroacupuncture).  Please call our Santa Cruz County Clinic in Capitola for more information and to make an appointment.

An acupuncturist uses herbs for a variety of treatment purposes. The active pharmacological ingredients in herbs act on the body to produce a balanced state of health and well-being. Herb teas and pills are gentle by comparison to Western pharmaceutical drugs because the active ingredients in herbs are not extracted and concentrated. Herb teas and pills, therefore, are effective yet have no side effects when prescribed by a licensed acupuncturist.
